Hootie, Collie Mix, four years-old

Hootie is a well-educated canine companion who is housebroken, knows basic obedience; plays fetch beautifully, and will "go find an object on command.   But he has not always walked an easy road, literally.  Soon after Hootie was rescued from a local animal control facility by North Shore Animal League America, it was discovered he needed more than just a home.  Diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia and bilateral stifle (knee) problems, Hootie underwent a series of four separate surgeries at the League's medical center, successfully correcting both knees and hips.   Though Hootie may not be the most graceful canine in the pack these days, he has recovered well and loves to run and play.

Recovery required months of inactivity and confinement, which can be hard on any dog, especially a smart, affectionate dog like Hootie. Treating the mind, as well as the body, both the League's medical and behavioral staff has been on the case.  He spends a great deal of this time out of his kennel run in either the training office or in the shelters"Real Life Room "(an area designed to imitate a home environment). Now he needs a home with people who know what it means to have a dog and are committed to providing a strong leadership role. He needs a loving family with children over the age of twelve and to move out of the "Real Life Room" into a real home.
